Some people like dogs. And then there are dog people.
We live with a Border Collie who runs the household schedule, a Yellow Lab who has never met a stranger, and a Black Lab puppy who is currently testing every rule we own. So we feel qualified to write this list.
Here are 17 signs you're one of us. Keep count, and be honest. Your dog already knows the answer.
Signs You're a Dog Person at Home
1. Your camera roll is mostly dog. There are a few photos of people in there somewhere. You'd have to scroll for them.
2. You've given up your spot. The good end of the couch. Your side of the bed. Your pillow. Somebody looked comfortable and you just couldn't do it.
3. You ask "who's a good dog?" out loud, daily. You already know who. You ask anyway.
4. Dog hair is part of every outfit. You own lint rollers. You've made peace with the fact that they're losing. Our Shed Happens tee says it best: "Shed Happens – Brush It Off."
5. You can't open a snack quietly. One crinkle of a bag and there's a nose at your knee. At some point you stopped fighting it and became the household Treat Dealer. (The hoodie has a front pouch pocket. We're not saying it's for treats. We're not not saying it.)
6. You spell things. W-A-L-K. P-A-R-K. T-R-E-A-T. And you're starting to suspect somebody has learned to spell.
Signs You're a Dog Person Out in the World
7. You greet the dog first. At any party, you know the dog's name within a minute. The host's name takes a little longer.
8. You've left early "because of the dog." Or you never went at all. Dog people have a built-in reason to head home, and we use it. 10. You know every dog on your block by name. Their people are "Biscuit's mom" and "the guy with the two doodles." This feels completely normal to you.
11. Your car windows have nose art. You could clean it off. You don't.
12. You plan trips around the dog. The first question isn't "where should we go?" It's "can the dog come?" followed closely by "okay, then who's watching the dog?"
13. Every jacket you own has poop bags in the pocket. Fall is when you find out how many. Pull out last year's coat and there they are, right where you left them.
Signs You're a Dog Person Deep Down
14. You'd honestly rather be home with your dog. Crowds are fine. A quiet evening with a dog on your feet is better. There's a word for that, and we put it on a shirt: Dogtrovert.
15. Your dog has a voice, and you do it. Full sentences. Opinions about dinner time. If you have more than one dog, each one sounds different, and everyone in the house knows which is which.
16. You apologize to your dog. Bumped them in the hallway? "Oh, sorry, buddy." Ran five minutes late on dinner? A full, sincere apology.
17. You believe your dog is the best dog. You also believe every other dog is the best dog. You see no problem with this.

- 1–5: Dog-curious. You're one good tail wag away from joining us.
- 6–11: Certified dog person. Your lint roller budget is real.
- 12–17: Welcome home. The dog runs your house and you're happy about it.
In our house, the Border Collie would like it noted that we scored a 17 and that dinner is now four minutes late.
